WORKERS WANTED: From left, apprentice community warden Nathan Mitchell, town clerk Sue Brotherwood and community warden Bradley Smith are seeking applications for the councils two new apprenticeships.

WANTED: Committed, hard-working applicants for varied and interesting roles. Must like fluorescent jackets.

If this sounds like you, Sudbury Town Council wants you to apply for two new apprenticeship places being offered next year.

The council currently has one apprentice community warden, 19-year-old Nathan Mitchell, who assists Bradley Smith and deals with queries and helps solve issues in the town from litter and graffiti to runaway cockerels.

Town clerk Sue Brotherwood said: “It all started with Nathan, who did some volunteering work for us as he was on Jobseeker’s Allowance.

“He did six months with us and asked if he could do some more as it gave him a reason to get up in the morning. He carried on and we were so impressed that we looked into an apprenticeship scheme, which he started in April.”

The 18-month NVQ level two course, which costs the council £5,000 and is part-funded by the Government, will now be extended to two more places in January and will include community work, administration, advice and market management.

“We are trying to make sure that, as and when people retire here, there are people who are trained up and ready, as a lot of skills are learned on the job,” said Mrs Brotherwood.

Anyone interested in the apprenticeships is encouraged to get involved in volunteering at the council.
