SHARED schooldays were the setting for Ken and Peggy Beck's meeting – and now they are celebrating 60 years of marriage.
The pair, of Minden Road in Sudbury, were in the same class from the age of just five and grew up together before they started courting when they were 16.
Ken (79) said: "We can't remember when we first met because we both attended Manor Street School in Braintree from when we were five years old to leaving at the age of 14. We share so many memories of our later schooldays."
Now the couple are looking forward to enjoying their diamond anniversary on August 25, and will celebrate with a special holiday in Chester, where they lived for many years after they married while Ken served with the Chester City Police after he was demobbed.
They married in 1943 at Braintree Congregational Church, while Ken was on leave from the military. Peggy recalled her wedding dress cost seven ration coupons.
He volunteered to join the RAF during World War Two from his reserved occupation as an engineer but was later transferred to the Army, serving with the Cheshire Regiment in Africa, India and Burma.
The pair have a daughter, an adopted son, three granddaughters and two great granddaughters.
After serving in Chester for six years, the couple moved to Suffolk when Ken joined the West Suffolk Constabulary, until resigning in 1964 to establish a driving school with a police colleague, John Albon, using the police's driving tuition techniques.
Peggy, also 79, was a member of the Sudbury Flower Club for 26 years and has always enjoyed gardening, scooping the finest garden in Sudbury in 1989.
Ken's hobby is restoring old cars and he is an active member of the Colne Valley Classic and Vintage Car Club.
They spend a lot of time working in the community, and have spent 16 years supporting the St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds, raising £50,000 over the years, and were given a community achievement award by Babergh Council earlier this year.
Peggy said: "We consider ourselves very lucky to still enjoy dancing and playing bowls. We have had a very busy life and always supported each other's interests."
She added: "Of course, during 60 years of marriage we have had our ups and downs and been through some difficult times, but as they say, love conquers all."
