When staff at a family-run paint company opened for business yesterday the first customer through the door caused a bit of a flap.
A racing pigeon on his way from France to Durham decided to quit over Suffolk, land in Glemsford and stroll through the doors of Ingilby Mariner Paints.
Staff member Chris Cleverley, 23, said: "It was a bit of a surprise. He wasn't going anywhere so we put him in a box with bread and water and contacted the owner."
Owner Walter Morris, of Durham, told them to keep his bird overnight and launch him towards the north again the next day.
"We did that – and four hours later he walked back through the door," said Chris.
"I rang the owner and he told me the pigeon was a bit of a late developer and had only flown 30 miles before. I'm not surprised he got a bit tired trying a 300-mile race."
Mr Morris said he would arrange transport for the bird back home.
In the meantime, staff at Ingilby have promised to look after the not-so-competitive racing pigeon, who they call Dizzy.
