World of reading fun for pupils
It is a bookworm’s favourite day of the year – World Book Day – and it did not go unnoticed in Sudbury and Glemsford this week.
Celebrated in more than 100 countries, the event has been running for 16 years.
This week, it was the turn of Sudbury schoolchildren to enjoy the pleasure of reading, and to enjoy stories told by library staff.
On Monday and Wednesday, the town’s library on Market Hill welcomed nearly 130 children for story telling sessions and a chance to read books.
In Cavendish today, the village’s primary school pupils will dress up as characters from their favourite books.
And at Glemsford Library, staff will be marking World Book Day for the whole month of March with a theme of myths and legends, fairy tales, nursery rhymes and poems. There will be related books on display and adults and children are being asked to contribute their favourite stories, rhymes and poems.
The library is also holding a literary crime quiz, which visitors can complete in the library or take home.
The quiz is 50 pence to enter with the proceeds going to the Friends of Glemsford Library Group, and the winner will receive a full set of the Morse detective novels.
There will be a favourite fairy tales craft session on Sunday, March 17, from 11.30am to 1.30pm for children, and there will be lots of story and poetry books on display. For more information, contact Glemsford Library on 01787 281803.
To mark the day, all school children are entitled to receive a World Book Day £1 book token which can be exchanged for one of eight specially published books. The tokens are available from all of Suffolk’s libraries.
Shona Bendix, chairman of Suffolk’s Libraries IPS, which runs Suffolk libraries, said: “I’m pleased that Suffolk’s libraries are getting behind World Book Day with such a wide range of events to encourage people of all ages to read and get involved. I hope that people will take advantage of the book tokens and go along to an event near them.”
