The Long Way Home, Eastern Angles Theatre on tour, Spring 2010

Eastern Angles are to be commended for this adventurous new production, using a script which was, unusually, not written specifically for them.

The call of the sea pulls the mythical Mother figure home after widowhood. En- route, she rescues a new son from a feral life in the woods and he accompanies her through a series of symbolic events on life's journey.

Susan McGoun's black-clad Old Mother travels across a sparse stage set with confidence and determination, dealing adroitly with her husband's ghost, shown ingeniously by a jug-headed puppet. Her clear voice and direct delivery are impressive. Theo Devaney's sympathetic dog-boy grows into a loyal companion renamed Andreas after his rescue.

Questions about his origins hang in the air, but he helps the Old Mother fend off the attentions of various bandits and peasants on the way, and learns the distinction between good and evil.

James Bolt and Jumaan Short take on several different roles in the narrative of this metaphorical journey, notably the olive-grove workers who help Dog-boy to understand something of the meaning of love.

It is an engaging interpretation of Charles Way's challenging play, which throws many of our assumptions about life's meanings of life into a Greek spin.

If you missed this, look out for their next appearance at the old Bentwaters site, Bentwater Roads, www.easternangles.co.uk/bentwaterroads, which promises a strange and thrilling new experience from this dynamic and inventive company.

Mary Dunk, 2010.
