Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Black Ram Theatre Company Spring Tour
Shakespeare couldn't have his young prince with revenge on his mind just disappearing at sea and wrecking his best Danish story.
Hamlet's cunning plan to dispose of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern with a forged letter on their journey to England is the bodywork on which Tom Stoppard's script sails forth.
Whether or not it really happened like that, Hamlet won't tell – so the lads finally get their chance. And they seize it with both hands, making love, as Hamlet said, to their employment whilst questioning everything life chucks at them. From the heads and tails of outrageous fortune to the excitement offered by the troupe of travelling players they play with questions, riddles and fate.
Tom Hartill's Rosencrantz and Benjamin Blyth's Guildenstern bounce this production along with dazzling charm, puzzling the audience as well as themselves with questions about their identity and purpose in life. Their Laurel and Hardy routines echo Hamlet's wild and whirling words with skill.
The travelling actors who didn't just offer special terms, but also comedy, tragedy and pastoral are brilliantly costumed in red and black. Led by Venetia Twigg as The Player, they cavort and twist through the nuances of the plot with ease and ingenuity. Hamlet, accompanied at all times by Yorick's skull, is given a new vivacity by Gillian Dean.
Stunning performances of this remarkable play about a play show Black Ram's many talents to the full.
