Rock choir set to visit

LAVENHAM’s village hall will be rocking to the strains of pop, Motown, gospel and chart songs next month.

The Rock Choir is performing in the village on Saturday, March 10, and the performance will welcome back a former well-known resident.

Event organiser Steve Beedle said: “Janet Gillies, a retired Army colonel and former matron of The Chelsea Hospital, left Lavenham two years ago to live in Bromley.

“In a chance discussion on a return visit to the village last year, she revealed that she had joined a rock choir which subsequently appeared at Wembley in 2010 in a 10,000-strong performance for charity.

“Following further discussions, arrangements were made for Janet and 59 colleagues from Bromley to put on a full performance in Lavenham as part of the village’s Jubilee celebrations.

“I’m really delighted that she’ll be coming back to Lavenham,” he added.

The choir featured in an ITV documentary last year called The Choir That Rocks. There are now over 16,000 members in 160 locations across the UK.

Steve added: “Suffolk now has its very own Rock Choir, in Sudbury, which started just a few weeks ago and the Lavenham show will be the first public performance for Sudbury members who will join over 60 Rock Choir members from Orpington and Bromley to perform toe-tapping numbers from a feel-good repertoire.”

The performance starts at 7.30pm and tickets went on sale on Monday priced at £8.

They are available by calling Lavenham Village Hall on 01787 248599.
