Curtain goes up on pub film cinema
AN award-winning pub handed £10,000 thanks to the puzzle-solving skills of its customers has held its first pop-up cinema evening.
The Thatchers Arms in Mount Bures, which was recently voted CAMRA Pub of the Year, was able to transform its function room into a cinema after winning a nationwide contest to find the smartest pub in England and Wales.
Run by Pilsner Urquell, the competition encouraged pub regulars to solve a puzzle card – with customers at the Thatchers Arms coming out on top.
Gaining top prize meant the pub was able to invest in a 78-inch screen and projector, top-of-the-range sound system and blackout blinds.
On Thursday, the new equipment was put to the test as regulars packed into the pub to watch the Oscar-winning hit The King’s Speech.
Landlord Mitch Adams said: “The evening went incredibly well and we had a full house. I’m still in shock that we won and have been thanking my customers ever since.”
The pub will now be running a film for £5 every Thursday evening, with the next film – Made in Dagenham – showing tonight.
