Book regales rail history
THE sequel to a book capturing the history of the long-defunct train lines that once served Sudbury and the surrounding area has gone on sale.
Branch Lines to Bartlow, by Vic Mitchell, is the latest in a series of books that will eventually become an encyclopedia covering every railway line in the British Isles.
The book includes sections on the Colne Valley and Halstead railway network and follows on from Branch Lines to Sudbury, which covers the Stour Valley line, published in May.
Copies of the book, priced at £16.95, are available from Perfect Miniatures in Friars Street, Sudbury.
Shop owner Peter Jonathan Hunt said: “This is an exciting publication for the local historian and transport enthusiast as well as anyone who remembers travelling along these lines through the lovely Colne and Stour Valleys, the countryside of Constable and Gainsborough.”
The book’s author and publisher is a railway enthusiast who, in 1955, became a founding member of the group that saved, restored and put back in operation the Ffestiniog railway in Snowdonia.
