Bittersweet. Bury St Edmunds Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds

The pre-marital misery of a girl about to be married off to a boring older man, but carrying a candle for a penniless musician, is the spark for this delightful musical story.

Her plight is discovered by Lady Shane, who's been there and done it before, and takes us back in time through her experience of marrying for love not money.

The journey includes some of Nol Coward's best-known melodies, and gives the combined talents of the Bury Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (BSEAODS), under the experienced direction of Brian Robinson, a great opportunity to shine.

Polly Carnegie's Sarah Millick offers an accomplished performance as the young woman destined for mediocrity with an older man. Polly takes us through Sarah's life with consistent warmth and confidence. Ian Robertson is Carl Lindick, the piano player who rises above his keyboard in life to elope with, and ultimately die for, a young society woman. Ian gives a strong and unsentimental portrayal in this demanding role.

The chorus perform their many roles with great joie de vivre. Their enthusiasm for the snappy dance routines, choreographed by Judith Thomas, and the songs is evident in their lively delivery. The attention to detail in the lavish and colourful costumes is a pleasure to note.

The enduring place of BSEAODS on the Suffolk cultural scene can only be reinforced by this highly enjoyable production, running till Saturday April 24th.
