Artworks – The Delightful Companions Concert, Blackthorpe Barn, Rougham
Artworks tenth annual concert, in the convivial surroundings of Blackthorpe Barn, maintained its high standard of musicianship and art for this celebratory concert. The Delightful Companions, a Baroque ensemble of four players, offered the audience a lively and diverse musical programme.
Handel, who died 250 years ago this year, and Henry Purcell, born 350 years ago, naturally featured large in their commemorative year.
Handel's A-minor Sonata, originally for harp and bass violin, caught the lively spirit of the Baroque. Jeremy Hughes' cello and Elizabeth Page's quick fingered recorder playing was very fine. Purcell was thought to have influenced Handel's early musical style, and his G-minor Sonata was a pleasure. Bach's output, without which no Baroque programme is complete, was represented by the 3rd cello suite, accompanied by Jeremy Hughes' witty commentary. The elegant playing of Pam Munks, Leader of the Suffolk Baroque Players and Philip Simms, founder of the Tallis Chamber Choir, ensured that the Delightful Companions lived up to their name.
The Artworks Exhibition of works by dynamic East Anglian artists was on view throughout the concert and gave a real feast for the senses. Helen Dougall's splendid batik landscapes, Gillian Crossley-Holland's concentration on earth, sky and sea and Penny Bhadresa's eye for minutiae of colour and texture all commanded attention. Janet French's imaginative transformations of leaves and paper, and Mary-Anne Morrison's creative textile sculptures embellished with stitching, were amongst the many exhibits on view.
Artworks continues to promote and encourage artistic talent in many forms, and deserves wide support for its high standards. Delightful Companions, in all senses, are to be found here in the unique atmosphere of Blackthorpe Barn.
