MOTORISTS who alter their number plates to change the way they look are being warned they face on-the-spot fines.
Almost 30 drivers in west Suffolk were fined £30 for having non-standard plates during a recent police crackdown.
Anyone caught twice will be reported to the DVLA which could revoke their registration.
Acting Sgt Phil Smith said it was important police were not hindered by unreadable plates when using devices such as speed cameras and automatic number plate recognition.
Witnesses should also be able to accurately read number plates of vehicles involved in crime.
Plates must be standard colours with no stylised letters or changes in spacing.
