MORE than 250 people were issued with penalty notices for failing to wear a seatbelt as part of a crackdown by Suffolk police.
Officers found that 257 people in vehicles they stopped had failed to belt up., during a week-long campaign.
Chief Insp Martin Barnes-Smith, of the roads policing unit, said: "If you are in a crash at just 30mph, you will be thrown forward with a force of between 30 and 60 times your body weight. Putting on a seatbelt takes seconds but they reduce this force and the risk of serious injury or death.
"I find it difficult to understand why, when faced with these facts, people continue to ignore this advice. Wearing a seatbelt is an absolute must and can save your life and those of others."
Failure to wear a seatbelt carries a fine of up to £500.
During 2007, 4,446 motorists in Suffolk were caught not wearing a belt and were issued with a fixed penalty.
