We had no option, says Lavenham ex-postmistress
THE trial of a new post office scheme in Lavenham comes after two years of fighting to keep the service in the village.
Two weeks ago, the Free Press revealed that the post office in the High Street is set to be relocated to Lavenham Pharmacy in a bid to safeguard the service.
The move, which is subject to public consultation and still has to be approved, will give residents access to post office facilities for longer hours – in line with the pharmacy opening times – and prevent the service being lost.
Beverley Hemsby, who ran the post office with her husband Nigel until recently, said the couple chose to leave the role after Mr Hemsby developed health problems.
“We did not just simply resign – it was something we had to do,” said Mrs Hemsby.
“I tried for two years to find someone else to run the post office and ensure it was still in the village.
“Hopefully what is being planned will allow that.”
The consultation into the proposals will run until March 6.

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 08:12 PMI request this letter is printed in your newspaper in response to your incorrect reporting Mr & Mrs Hensby must indeed be commended for their tireless efforts, under very difficult personal circumstances, trying to find a new suitable location for the post office. The property was on the market as a going concern for a long period of time before approaching local businesses. This has been far from an easy decision for them as they now lose the salaried income that the post office provided. What astounds me is the way previous newspaper reports have sensationalised the post office move, when the couple have tried endlessly to find new proprietors, and reporters contacting every one BUT Mr & Mrs Hensby before printing their report. May I also correct your statements regarding "EX postmaster and mistress"; Mrs & Mrs Hensby are STILL the post master and mistress until the consultation period is completed and the move is approved. Taylor Dudley must also be applauded for being the ONLY business in Lavenham, willing to ensure the continuity of a Post Office service. I for one wish Mr & Mrs Hensby a peaceful future. My thoughts and prayers are with them at this very difficult time.
