‘We’ll do all we can to save library’

THE future of Sudbury library is expected to become clearer when councillors meet to discuss plans to save it from the threat of closure.

Sudbury Town Council is one of 14 community groups across Suffolk which have been chosen to run a library as part of a county-wide pilot project.

The groups are set to take over some or the full running of the facilities, with support from Suffolk County Council.

Councillors in Sudbury are meeting at the end of this month to discuss the formulation of a business case for the running of the library on Market Hill and this will then be considered by the county council in October.

Sue Brotherwood, town council clerk, said the authority would do everything in its power to save the library.

“We are delighted to have been selected as one of the groups for the pilot scheme and we will now work tirelessly to formulate a robust, water-tight business plan, which will ensure the survival of the library.

“As well as being a vital service, the building used to be the town’s corn exchange so has huge historical importance.”

With something this important why would anyone consider closing it, lets hope this succeeds and we don't lose out because of the county council's divestment plans.

If someone else takes over the library will the same librarians still work there? I think the library is a precious resource to the community. The staff should be our friends, & chat to us about fab stuff, from what I'm doing on my birthday to my favourite episode of Doctor Who. Not much to ask for! Maybe a few more computers & extra computer time, but that may stretch the budget to snapping point! Stewart (Borgduck)
