Warden cut on the cards

FEWER wardens could be wandering car parks in Sudbury if a change in management goes ahead.

The town’s car parking group is working on a business plan to ensure short-stay parking remains free for three hours.

The group – made up of town councillors and business leaders – believes the only way to guarantee this is to get Babergh District Council to relinquish its hold on the car parks and run the sites itself.

Tony Platt, a member of the group, said the proposals had been given the “amber light” by the district council.

He added that if successful, the group was keen to employ fewer wardens to save costs.

“We need to look at the whole area but less supervision and wardens would reduce costs,” said Mr Platt, who was speaking at a town council meeting. “It is something that needs investigating.”

But Nigel Bennett said that this approach would lead to people taking advantage, and income from fines would be lost.

“The income from car parks would fall if the number of wardens drops off as people would know about this,” he said. “People would stay as long as they could with no checks.”

Both Hadleigh and Lavenham have been approached about the potential takeover, although the group was keen to stress that no partnership agreement has been reached and the plans are still at an early stage.

More details of the plans are expected at next month’s meeting of Sudbury Town Council.
