Village library is safe, says councillor
A LIBRARY which was targeted for closure has had its future secured, according to a county councillor.
Great Cornard Library was among 29 others across the county facing the axe in a series of austerity measures unveiled by Suffolk County Council.
A consultation to find community groups or businesses to run the service was carried out, but a public backlash against the proposals forced the authority into a rethink.
On Thursday, Suffolk county councillor Peter Beer announced the facility was safe.
“The future of the library is secure,” he said. “It will be managed by a structural organisation directly from the county council.”
Mr Beer said the authority still needed to make £50million of savings but this would not be at the cost of the library.
“We are open to anyone who wants to come forward with ideas,” he said. “This library is a role model that we want to roll out to others.”
Lisa Elmer, libraries area manager for the county council, said it was committed to keeping libraries open.
