Two shops set to close
TWO stores are closing in Sudbury in the next few weeks, with many others shops staging final clearance and stock sales for January.
The women’s clothing store Bonmarché in North Street is to close after the retailer was bought by a private equity firm nearly two weeks ago,
The new owner, Sun European Partners, has closed 160 of its 394 Bonmarché stores, including stores in Sudbury and Haverhill, targeting areas where customer levels were low.
A member of staff at the already-depleted store, which is running a closing down sale, said they had not been told when the store would be shut officially.
“We are not being told anything at the moment,” she said.
Jewellery and accessories store Millie Moo, in Friars Street, is also to close.
Owner Sue Clark has run the store for the last six years and says the shop has already been re-let to another business.
She said: “We are not a statistic of the recession or anything like that. We already run a very successful online business and we are going as the lease has come to an end.
“It’s a shame but our customers can still visit us online.”
She said trade in the shop was quieter than the same period last year, but thought shops in Sudbury were still thriving despite the tough economic conditions for retailers.
“I can’t see many empty shops here, unlike other places, and this shop has been re-let straight away and I think the town is doing well,” she added
