Twelve-hour charity push tops £600

PEDAL TO THE METAL: Sudbury Waitrose workers take part in a 12-hour bikeathon for Macmillan Cancer Research.

STAFF at a Sudbury supermarket got on their bike to cycle to a £600 total for a cancer charity.

Workers at Waitrose in Station Road took part in a 12-hour bikeathon, from 9am to 9pm, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research on Friday.

More than 20 checkout staff, customer assistants and managers took turns to complete half-an-hour slots on an exercise bike as pedal power was turned into cash for the charity, which provides emotional and financial support for those suffering from cancer.

The event, organised by Sally Booth, was the first in a number of fundraisers being planned by the store as it seeks to raise £3,000 for the charity over a year.

“This was an excellent contribution towards our target, which will pay for the cost of a Macmillan nurse for a month,” said Waitrose staff member Lynsey Powell.

“Lots of people have had experience of Macmillan and we chose the charity because we wanted to give something back. All the shoppers were very positive and supportive.”
