Sun shines on Melford

AN estimated 10,000 people flocked to Long Melford Street Fair at the weekend.
Despite the risk of rain, the crowds came in their droves to enjoy the 12th annual street fair, which was opened by Sir Richard and Lady Hyde Parker of Melford Hall.
And unlike last year, the showers stayed away as record numbers browsed the 110 stalls lining Hall Street.
Homemade cakes, pies and plants were all on sale, while a range of groups and charities took the chance to highlight their work.
“We were very fortunate that the fair took place in the middle of two days of rain and it seemed like the sun was shining on us,” said John Nunn, chairman of the street fair committee.
“We had a record number of visitors and there was a lovely atmosphere, which made for a great day.”
Fun fair rides, a helter skelter and a Punch and Judy show helped keep youngsters entertained, while a birds of prey display wowed the crowds.
Live music was provided by Long Melford Silver Band, rock group Route 66 and Elvis impersonator Paul Thorpe. Members of Long Melford Fire Service were on hand to demonstrate their skills.
“It was a fun day for the whole family and we have had some excellent feedback,” said Mr Nunn.
“Plans for next year will start in a few weeks time and we have already had a stall holder asking if she can come along.”
