Budding cooks battled it out to find Sudbury’s top curry chef – and raised vital funds for a children’s hospice at the same time.

Thirteen chefs conjured up their best curry dish for diners at the Sudbury Institute Club.

The winner was Dave Noad, from Corporal Lillie Close, who is a member of the Station Road social club, with his chicken curry creation.

The club came up with the idea as a competition after one of its members bought a curry book from one of the town’s charity shops.

Club manager Neil Graham said: “We were chatting about making curry, as we make a lot of curries for our darts team, and it turned into a conversation about who could make the best. We decided to make it into a competition and raise some money for charity in the process. It was great fun and I’m absolutely thrilled with how much we raised.”

The cookery competition was held over four weeks and raised £700 for the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (Each).

Winning chef Dave, who won a meal for two at the Kohinoor curry restaurant in Gregory Street, said: “It was really tough going as the other chefs were all very good.”

Each Suffolk fundraiser Nikki Brown visited the club, which has 400 members, to collect a cheque for the proceeds of the curry competition. She said: ”Thank you to everyone who took part – these funds will go towards providing care and support to local children and their families.”
