Slice of £100,000 on offer

COMMUNITY groups could be in with a chance of receiving a much-needed cash boost thanks to a £100,000 capital grants scheme.

Babergh District Council is currently on the lookout for new projects from across the whole district, which represents the progress and development of community projects and facilities.

The authority is interested in projects that can help to benefit communities – these could be in the form of wildlife centres, village hall improvements, sports or play projects and transportation facilities for community use.

The only requirement is the projects that apply to Babergh’s Community Grants programme have to ensure they have already secured at least a third of the total project fund.

Over the last year the council has already helped numerous projects, including Hartest Bowls Club, which received £750 to buy bowls equipment.

Jo Beever, Babergh’s community grants officer, said: “We would like all applicants wishing to apply to be aware that they will need to demonstrate a basic need for their project and prove that they have made considerable effort to obtain money from other sources.

“All applications are on a first-come, first-served basis and we would prefer any forthcoming applicants to contact us first to discuss as to whether their application is relevant.”

While council budgets are under severe pressure and a number of savings have been made in a variety of ways, the fund remains available to help improve the facilities that are already within communities.

Mrs Beever said that she hoped that by continuing to provide this kind of support the council could nurture community projects. It would also demonstrate that with ambition and hard work it is possible to achieve improvements despite the difficult economic times.
