Proposals for East House scrapped
Plans to redevelop the Grade II listed East House in Hadleigh and build houses on the land behind have been withdrawn.
Babergh District Council had earmarked the former putting green of the Georgian house – which was once used for a range of community events and activities – for the construction of four detached homes and a cart lodge.
The authority also proposed turning the house, in George Street, into two homes.
However, faced with a backlash from campaigners, who claimed the land had been as used a village green for the last 20 years, the council has decided to go back to the drawing board.
A spokeswoman for the council said: “The decision was taken following objections and responses received during a consultation exercise carried out last year.”
The council has said it still hopes to use funds raised from the sale of East House to run a new community facility in Stonehouse Road, which was completed late last year, but a public exhibition will take place before any amended scheme goes before planners.
