Library users ‘dismayed’ by latest plans

MOBILE library users face a greatly reduced service if new cost-cutting proposals are given the go-ahead.

Under plans being considered by Suffolk County Council, mobile library visits will be reduced from fortnightly to monthly, while stops in towns or villages that already have a library will be axed.

A consultation asking users of the service for their opinions and suggestions on how to save money began this week.

If the feedback is positive and the proposals implemented, they would save the authority over a third of the £600,000 of public money spent on the service each year.

Among the villages which would be affected by the move are Long Melford, Acton, Great Waldingfield, Boxford and Cavendish.

Richard Kemp, a Babergh district councillor for Long Melford – which is currently visited by the mobile library every other Wednesday – said the plan would dismay book lovers.

I think Sudbury library should be run by nice staff who are your friends, & will happily chat with you from everything to what you're doing on your birthday to your favourite episode of Doctor Who. Is that too much to ask?! STEWART (Borgduck)
