Let's write to the PCT
SO, poor old Walnuttree Hospital is to meet its doom at last (Free Press, October 1).
But wait a minute, didn't the Independent Review Panel recommend that it shouldn't be closed until the new facility was in place?
Well that's clever, isn't it. They're not actually closing the hospital, just removing the beds. No beds equals no patients which equals no need for staff.
Reading back at this evolving situation I note that in November 2004 director of clinical services Jonathan Williams, when refuting the rumour that there would be no new hospital, said that it was envisaged that the new building would contain among other things 30 GP beds.
Promises, promises!
Repeatedly in reply to my letters to various health bodies the phrase "care closer to home" is used for the vision of the future. How much closer to home can Walnuttree (or a new hospital) be for Sudbury people?
In any case when people need hospital care, hospital is where they need to be, not at home or in a nursing home.
These can never equate with the 24-hour care from our community hospital.
The Free Press article also tells us that our faithful nurses will have to compete for jobs. What jobs? As I understand it (and I stand to be corrected) there are only three nursing posts in Sudbury, to be fought for by up to 15 nurses.
Ironic when we learn recently in the press that the PCT central management team has expanded in the last three years from 80 to 190.
I feel that we all should be supporting those faithful staff of all sections, who have kept Walnuttree ticking over since the first threat of closure many years ago, and be writing letters to the PCT by the sackload, not only for their sake, but eventually all of our own.
How about it Sudburians?
