Grant cash helps villages

GRANTS designed to help village life flourish have been awarded to projects in Kersey and Long Melford.

Suffolk Housing Society (SHS) chose the two villages as part of a scheme to help communities across the county.

In Long Melford, St Catherine’s Church was given a grant of £2,000 to improve disabled access to the building.

The Rev Ian Friars said he was delighted with the donation.

“It is a very generous grant and will benefit the elderly and infirm, which means we can serve the community better,” he said.

In Kersey, a project to clear the village’s allotments and bring the ground back into use received £1,000.

Norah Orriss, from the Nightingale Trust, which owns the land, said: “This is good news and the money will be very useful.

“There is a lot of work to be done on the allotments and we have had to beg and borrow to keep them going.”

In all, the SHS shared £18,500 between five schemes and is now encouraging applications for this year’s £15,000 funding pot.
