Disability charity gets £155,000 lottery grant

The Sudbury branch of a charity for adults with learning disabilities will benefit from a share of a £155,000 lottery grant.

The Befriending Scheme, which is based in Gainsborough Street and has six other centres throughout East Anglia, has been given the money by the Big Lottery Fund.

The funds will be used to help develop the centres and continue to create and support friendships between adults with learning disabilities and other members of the community, including training volunteers.

Shirley Moore, chief executive officer of The Befriending Scheme, said: “We are so delighted to be offered this grant which will certainly help us to continue offering valuable services to people with learning disabilities and also extend them to other vulnerable members of our community in Suffolk.”

Mrs Moore said the charity would continue to work closely with the Citizens Advice Bureaux and police.

“This is a very exciting time for us,” she added.

The Befriending Scheme was founded in 1989 as West Suffolk Befriending Scheme and its Sudbury centre opened in 2002. This is the charity’s fifth lottery grant.
