Dig team to visit Nayland
NAYLAND residents will have a chance to unearth hidden objects, possibly dating back hundreds of years, when an archaeological team visits the village.
The project will be run by Dr Carenza Lewis of Channel 4’s Time Team and will involve digging up to 20 test pits in gardens and open spaces.
Nayland with Wissington Conservation Society is co-ordinating the event, taking place in October, and is calling for volunteers to offer their own gardens as well as those who want to dig at other village sites. Pits are usually about a metre square and can be 1.2 metres deep.
Together with Daniel King, community heritage officer of Managing a Masterpiece, the archaeologists will be on hand to give guidance while digging is taking place.
Any finds will be washed, recorded, retained for analysis and returned to the owners, if requested. Pits are completed in two days and are back-filled with turf.
Society secretary Andora Carver said Mrs Lewis would be giving a talk at the village hall on September 4 at 7.30pm and everyone was invited to come and find out what was involved.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for us to learn more about Nayland’s early history,” she said.
A tea party will be held in the Carvers’ barn on October 7 with all the finds laid out for identification.
