Devoted family man and inspiration dies
An ex-mayor of Sudbury whose vision and determination gave a new lease of life to the town’s best-known landmark has died, aged 78.
The Rev Tony Moore was the driving force behind the campaign to keep St Peter’s Church on Market Hill open for community use after it was made redundant.
He masterminded an ambitious two-week festival to prove how useful the building could be, and was the first chairman of the Friends of St Peter, which has run it ever since.
This week, he had been described as an inspiration by family and friends.
Roger Green, the Friends’ current chairman, said without Mr Moore’s contribution it was doubtful the church would be open today.
“It was his natural instinct to think big. He was a man of vision and ideas, who could inspire positive responses from those around him.”
Sudbury councillor John Sayers, a childhood friend, described Mr Moore as a devoted family man who also had amazing determination.
“I believe St Peter’s would have been just a monument today if it wasn’t for him,” he said.
Lord Phillips of Sudbury, a long-time friend who recently co-founded a community history project with Mr Moore, said: “He was a man of rare energy, vision and can-do spirit with a parallel gift of getting the best out of others.”
A service of thanksgiving will be held at St Peter’s on Market Hill on Sunday at 3.30pm. Donations in his memory can be made to St Nicholas Hospice Care.
