Bullied in to parking charges

IT should come as no surprise to anyone that one year later, almost to the day, we are again being bullied into giving up our free parking in Sudbury.

Last year we were informed there was a deficit in the rates and this was the reason they were thinking of then charging everyone for parking their vehicles, even though it's been their proud boast since some time in or around the late 60s that Sudbury will never have charges for parking your car.

This year we have again been given the same sad story, which again we're supposed to believe, even though every year rates still spiral and we see little or no benefit for what we pay.

Last year, considering they said they were so strapped for cash, they still managed to find the money to erect free ticket machines, all over the town, that were obviously going to be changed into payment machines at some future date, and bring us in line with all other towns.

It should be noted that before this decision is taken, and they go back on their word by introducing this draconian system, many of us only come into Sudbury because of the free parking, and therefore help keep Sudbury prosperous.

I know that, if these parking charges come into force, I will be just one of many others that will change their shopping practices and in future look elsewhere for a better deal.

So, before any decision is made, they should think of the consequences, because if we have to pay for the privilege of shopping in Sudbury, we may as well go to any of the other towns with a far greater selection of shops, and spend our hard-earned money there.

Whatever will they think of next? Are we soon to find parking machines in the supermarket car parks as well, and if so, where will it end?

I say keep your word, and let us keep our free parking.
