Boxford daredevils draw the crowds
EXCITING ACTION: Crowds appreciated the thrilling spectacle as riders went hurtling around the wooden circular walls of the famous Wall of Death in Boxford at the weekend.
THRILLING speed and the deafening roar of motorbike engines brought thousands of people to Boxford at the weekend to experience the famous Wall of Death stunt show.
Hosted at the White Hart pub, which is where the first ever Wall of Death was performed, the Ken Fox Troupe entertained nearly 3,000 people with their travelling show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The first Wall of Death was performed by Tornado Smith and his wife, whose stage name was Marjorie Dare, and they lived at the pub.
The stunt pioneer’s real name was George William Smith, and he was also famous for incorporating a lioness called Briton into the act. The animal was buried in the pub’s grounds.
For White Hart bar manager Sophie Segger, the weekend stunt show was an unforgettable experience – as she ended up getting a ride on the handlebars of one of the bikes, and it was something she had always wanted to do.
Sophie, 23, of Homefield, Boxford, said: “I’ve seen the show quite a few times before when it’s been to Boxford.
“This time I got the chance to go round and round the wall about eight to 10 times and it was crazy. The force just keeps you on the motorbike.
“I got so dizzy and I felt a bit sick afterwards but it was so exciting and I’m glad I’ve done it.”
Sophie recently completed a 10,000 foot parachute jump with friends and colleagues from the village’s pubs and raised more than £1,000 for the first response team, 3PR.
