Better buses just the ticket

I WRITE to complain about the disgraceful 84 bus route service.

I would gladly use the buses if they actually provided a value-for-money service at times of the day when it would be useful to me and my family.

However, I am forced to use my car for nearly all trips to either Sudbury or Colchester, solely down to the cost of the tickets – a ticket that can only be bought for a single journey since cheaper return tickets have been axed. It's cheaper to use the car than to take the bus. Where is the logic in that? Where is the environmental push to get us out of our cars?

In the morning, a bus does not run at a time that would be convenient to most people wishing to commute to London for work and should you return back from London later than 5.45pm then the only option would be to get a taxi.

The buses on the 84 route are archaic and are always breaking down. My son recently travelled on a bus which broke down and the replacement bus sent then also broke down. Most buses on this route are from the late 1980s and are a disgrace inside. They are smelly, dirty and cold in the winter.

There is no service at all on a Sunday and don't even think of going out on a Saturday night and getting a bus home. There is no service for the youth of our area so again additional car trips by parents are needed to ferry the kids to town and back.

How can you get on the bus to go to college in Colchester and be able to use your Explore card to get there, but not be able to use it coming home? Especially when you are not able to purchase a return ticket.

This means it is dearer coming back – again more cost to the youths and their parents.

Fares and tickets seem to be changed without consultation and there is no thought for the impact on the community. I'm sure the bus company will try and justify and counteract all of the above points, but I believe they have no case.
