Appeal set to decide failed takeaway bid

Disputed plans to turn a shop in Great Cornard into a takeaway could be back on after an appeal was launched.

An application to change Motor Spares in Bures Road into a fish and chip shop was thrown out by Babergh District Council last month.

The proposal, put forward by Michael Ladak, who runs Mick’s Fish and Chips in Landsdown Road, Sudbury, was defeated after the council’s planning officer, Stuart McAdam, said they would have a negative impact on nearby residents and result in inappropriate parking.

However, Mr Ladak has opted to contest the decision and, if an appeal is successful, the takeaway plans could go ahead.

“Mr Ladak has considered his options and chosen to appeal,” said Nick Peasland, who is acting as the agent for the applicant.

“The plans remain the same and there are no amendments. It is believed all matters have been addressed and the plans should be approved.”

The original application was submitted a year ago and many villagers fought a long battle against the plans, which they believed they had won.

One of the campaigners, Guy Palmer, said he was disappointed the council’s decision could be overturned, given the affect the takeaway could have on traffic, anti-social behaviour and the eating habits of nearby schoolchildren.

“We have been fighting this for a year and anyone with half a brain can see this is not a suitable site for a takeaway,” said Mr Palmer, from Head Lane.

A spokeswoman for Babergh District Council confirmed an appeal had been lodged and would be decided by an independent planning inspector.

A decision is expected on January 11, with a site visit being carried out before a verdict is made.
