Against closure of our schools

I WOULD like to express my support for the letter written by Penny Wright (Concern over schools change, October 29).

I echo all her concerns and totally agree with everything she says. I feel that to close our middle schools is going to create more problems than it will resolve.

Where will the schools put all these extra children? Are we going to see the return of Nissen huts built on existing school playgrounds or playing fields?

The class sizes are already, in my opinion, too big and education bosses should be looking at reducing them. Although on the letters sent around to parents we are assured class sizes will be kept down, how long before this slips and class sizes increase to over 30?

How will the extra intake of pupils affect those children with special needs? Will there be extra staff brought in to help provide the support these children need?

What happens to the teachers who currently work in middle schools? Will they be offered posts at the primary and upper schools or will they become another statistic on the already appalling unemployment list in this country?

What will happen to the extra cars and buses this change will create? These children will need to get to school. Are the education bosses going to provide adequate resources to cover this or is there going to be yet more congestion around our schools? Not all children live within walking distance of school and for safety reasons, they need to be taken to school by a parent or by bus.

What will happen to the middle schools themselves? No doubt they will be sold off to some property developers for a fat sum of money. I personally doubt our children will see any benefit from sale of these schools.

I also feel very strongly about the statement being bandied around that children from two-tier systems do better at school than those in three-tier. I question this statement because a child who is prepared to listen, learn and work hard at school; a child who has the right support at home and within their school will always do well, no matter which system they are in.

I would urge as many parents as possible to attend the forums being held, these changes are not for the better of our children and will never be.
