Soccer: Morsley makes point on Darts
AFC Sudbury boss Mark Morsley insists his players will be fully focussed on Saturday's visit to basement side Ilford despite their crunch clash with league leaders Dartford looming just seven days later.
To ensure his side avoid complacency, Morsley will again rotate his starting eleven for the trip to London and he will be disappointed if he is heading back up the A12 on Saturday evening with anything other than three more points.
"There is always the danger that the players may be looking ahead to the Dartford game," Morsley said. "But we will change the team again on Saturday and that is always a great way of keeping players focused.
"With all due respect to Ilford, I would expect any team we put out on Saturday to be able to beat them. At the end of the day, the reality is that winning at Ilford is just as important as any other game.
"It is still three points on offer and if we drop three points there and beat Dartford then it will count for nothing.
"It is a cliche but it is true, we have to take each game at a time."
Morsley and his players have every right to go into the game with confidence having embarrassed Ilford 8-1 at King's Marsh in the reverse fixture last September.
Top scorer James Rowe is almost certain to start his first game since the defeat at Arlesey on January 5 after coming off the bench in Saturday's 3-0 win over Tilbury and netting a brace in a friendly against Clacton on Tuesday.
Morsley is keeping other changes close to his chest but Brett Girling is likely to miss out after picking up a knock to his calf in the game at Clacton. Chris Bacon and Gareth Simpson have minor knocks and Chris Tracey is another two weeks away from fitness.
Tuesday's win at Clacton enabled fringe players such as assistant boss Nicky Smith and Kevin Hughes – who has just returned from a loan spell at the Eastern Counties League side – to gain some valuable playing time.
It also gave Morsley the chance to run the rule over two of the club's promising young reserve team players – and he liked what he saw.
"I think friendlies are good this time of the year," he said.
"They can be beneficial to the players who need match practice and gives us the chance to look a reserve players.
"Nicky Smith got 80 minutes on Tuesday, Rowey got 75 and the reserve boys came on in the second half and did really, really well.
"Danny Stokes has been involved with us before and is probably the best player in the reserves but we also had a look at young Lee Ifield who is probably about four feet tall but did well.
"It was funny, he was sitting next to Kevin Hughes and Simon Head in the dressing room and they must have seemed like giants to him but he got involved and did himself proud."
