Football: 'Same again' says Morsley

AFC Sudbury swept to a 6-0 League Cup semi-final success at Heybridge on Tuesday night, and manager Mark Morsley is looking for more success at Canvey Island on Saturday.
"I enjoyed it, but it will mean nothing if we do not perform on Saturday," he said. "We have to put that Cup success on the shelf and take it down again just before the final.

"We have to concentrate on the league now. The next two games are vital." AFC vist fourth-placed Canvey this weekend, and third-placed Ware a week later.

"If we can win both games that will put pressure on Dartford, who will then know they can't afford any slip-ups."

Dartford are currently five points ahead of AFC, who have a game in hand. Ware are five points behind AFC, who have played one game more.

Tuesday night's victory extended AFC's unbeaten run to 14 games, 12 in the Ryman League, and followed on from Saturday's convincing 3-0 defeat of Brentwood Town.

"Tuesday was a hell of a result, but so was Saturday," said Morsley. "At Heybridge it was an oustanding team performance. We dominated the game."

And he picked up a bonus, with Kevin Hughes having his first 90 minutes for the first team since suffering cruciate ligament damage at Maldon on September 23, 2006.

"He was awesome," said Morsley, "but so were the rest of the back four. Hopefully it's the end of a very long road and his recuperation is complete. He needs to get stamina back into his game after such a long lay-off.

"Saturday was also a pleasing performance. We showed our ability to keep the ball and dictate play. In both games the defence did well under pressure.

"Then we get Gareth Heath to drop in behind James Rowe, and we can hit people on the break, which we did in both games."

Morsley had to adjust his line-up before kick-off on Tuesday, Matty Clements tweaking a hamstring during the warm-up.

The injury will be assessed at training tonight, but Clements will not be rushed back. "Hamstrings are tricky with pacey players, so we will be careful," said Morsley.

The League Cup final, against premier division Ramsgate – who AFC beat in the FA Trophy last season – is at Dartford on Wednesday, April 2. Ramsgate won 1-0 at Walton Casuals.

Darren Bethell rejoined AFC from Wivenhoe Town at the end of last week for a third spell at King's Marsh. "We were a little stretched in the squad," said Morsley. "Darren can come in and do a good job for us. He gives us an option out wide. He came on on Saturday and did well."

Hadleigh United put in a seven-day notice of approach for reserve striker Danny Stokes this week, which the player has turned down, to Morsley's delight.

"He wants to stay. He has a great attitude and the commitment he has shown to the club is great. We are in a League Cup final, and he scored the only goal at Redbridge to help us towards that."

The club is running a free bus to Canvey on Saturday, leaving King's Marsh at midday, and picking up at Braintree Wyevale (12.15pm) and Boreham Interchange (12.35pm). To book a seat email mark @mjmfs.com or ring 07768 224257.
